How High Voltage Affects Powder Coating Performance

When a powder coating gun operates at higher voltage (kV), the electrostatic charge applied to the powder particles becomes stronger. This increased charge improves the attraction between the powder and the grounded workpiece, allowing particles to stick more easily upon contact. As a result, transfer efficiency rises and less powder is lost to overspray.

High voltage settings are especially effective on large, flat surfaces. The strong electrostatic field helps create uniform coverage even when the gun-to-part distance is slightly increased, which can improve spraying stability and operator comfort. In these conditions, the coating guns delivers consistent film build with fewer passes.

However, higher kV is not always better. Excessive voltage can overcharge powder particles, increasing repulsion as they approach the surface.
